Coronavirus outbreak: B.C. predicts new cases could hit 0 by mid-June if people stay home

Health officials in British Columbia said Monday that although the province has “flattened the curve” when it comes to new COVID-19 cases, people still need to maintain physical distancing.

The province released its latest modelling data Monday as political leaders in B.C. determine how to re-open various businesses, schools and the health-care system while avoiding a spike in cases.

B.C.’s daily number of new cases will reach zero by mid-June if social interactions remain at around 35-40 per cent of normal, said chief provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive and critical care in British Columbia continues to drop, though dozens of new cases are still being reported, provincial officials said Monday.

Henry confirmed 53 new cases since Saturday and three additional deaths due to the novel coronavirus. The death toll in the province now stands at 117.

The province now has 2,224 confirmed cases of the disease. Also, 1,417 patients have fully recovered, or about 64 per cent of total cases.

Seventy-seven people remain in hospital, while the number of patients in intensive care has dropped from 23 to 20.
